Jim McSorley noted that the joy about the MONOSEM planter, other than it’s accuracy, is the fact that it can be pulled with any suitable HP tractor that has twin spools and a 540rpm 6-spline PTO-shaft. Even with an open centre hydraulic system on a tractor, there is no need for an additional external hydraulic pump to drive the planter’s fan.

The fertiliser tools that were chosen on this planter are :

a ) No-Till Coulter & Double Disc

interchangeable to

b ) No-Till coulter & Auto-Reset Trip-Tine Combination

Due to the softer conditions Leon had fitted the double discs cutting nicely through his wheat stubble.

After the first planted maize fields had come up Leon was keen to show his neighbours how well his new Monosem No-Till planter had performed.

Everyone who has ever planted with a MONOSEM planter or who has farmed next to a MONOSEM owner will confirm that there is no other planter that can match the precision of a MONOSEM. But even with this reputation and track record in mind it was amazing for Leon to see the same precise pip placement performed in No-Till conditions.

After Monotec presented the first Quad-Max planter on this year’s Nampo show, various configurations of this new model now make their way to the customers.

One of the trends that South Africa’s agricultural sector is currently experiencing is the trend towards narrower row spacings. In areas where maize was traditionally planted at 91cm or wider many rows now stand 76cm apart. Especially for soybeans there is little doubt that it has to be planted even closer but also for maize there are more and more hectares planted in narrower row spacings as close as 38cm apart.

For row widths up to 45cm Monotec South Africa announced their new model, the QUAD-MAX this year in February. This construction with large flotation wheels in front and in the rear is completely new to the Monosem product range and not only accommodates the narrower row spacings but it also features a huge fertiliser and seed capacity which will significantly reduce its downtime compared to other models.

The trend to narrow rows is often accompanied with a desire towards a wider operation. If new equipment needs to be purchased on a farm, one would want the new machine to do more work in less time. In this aspect, the new QUAD-MAX has groundbreaking benefits. Planter configurations of up to 36 rows are available in various row widths from 91.4 to 45cm. Monotec’s QUAD-MAX has a heavy, solid framework with no need for any section to fold forward or upward for transport.

Wide configurations consist of 2 or 3 sections of 6, 8, 10 or 12 rows being permanently hooked together and towed sideways for transport from the field to the farm. A further advantage of the QUAD-MAX’s design is that no fans, hydraulic motors or horizontal transport pipes are needed to get seed and fertiliser from the bulk hoppers to the row units. The seed and fertiliser for each row units is carried right on top of it which also has the advantage of an even weight distribution across the full width of the planter.

Today’s farmer looking for new technology requires not only larger planters but also higher accuracy. It is good to know that the QUAD-MAX planters rely on the famous Monosem row units and Fertisystem fertiliser augers. To this day, the Monosem seed meter is the most accurate on the market and at the same time it has a well known track record of durability and low maintenance. Not only maize, sunflower and soybeans but also sorghum, peanuts and even canola is placed precisely pip by pip by the Monosem units.

The Fertisystem fertiliser augers on the Quad-Max guarantee even distribution of granular fertiliser. Their screws are built like a corkscrew and even low-quality fertiliser being put down in high quantities is handled accurately without any possibility of fertiliser build up on the augers.

Available as a thoroughbred No-Till planter but also as a conventional machine the QUAD-MAX offers a range of fertiliser openers including Monotec’s popular coulter & trip-tine combination, the new coulter & double disc combination as well as a 20 inch single disc opener with side knife.

Manfred Hellberg, a farmer from the Dundee region of KwaZulu-Natal and also the Müller Elektronik Agent for South Africa, has put the first electrically driven Monosem Planter in South Africa into the ground.

Manfred has successfully planted 80 hectares of dryland maize with the machine last December. With the support of Duncan Morphew the Area Manager of Monotec, the South African Monosem distributor, Manfred had fitted 24V “Nema 24” stepper motors with angle drive gearboxes onto the seed meter shafts of the new 4-row trailed Monosem No-Till planter that had the new 2016 NXM row units fitted. For the dry fertiliser, Manfred supplied, and Monotec fitted a 14 Amp KAG DC motor. The same DC motor that often gets used on other planters or air-seeders fitted with a Müller system. While Müller Elektroniks in Germany wrote the custom software to drive this planter electronically, it was still necessary to use two ECU’s in order to control the seed and fertiliser shafts. In future, the new ECU’s supplied by Müller will be able to handle both functions in one ECU. The maize was planted with MAP (33) fertilizer according to the variable rate prescription maps supplied by Kynoch’s agronomist. The Müller system was also able to shut-off the rows when the planter overlapped any sections already planted using the automatic section control functionality in the Müller system. Since stepper motors run more optimally at 24V, it required the fitting of a 12 to 24V DC converter because the tractor only had a 12V power supply. In addition, two MRC modules from Müller needed to be fitted. The MRC module contains the electronics necessary to drive the stepper motors. Each MRC Module can control 2 rows including the seed sensors. Various models of seed sensors from Müller and Dickey John were tested during the trials.

On the left: 24V “Nema 24” Steppermotor with angle drive gearboxes driving the seed meter of the 2016 NX-M Row Unit. On the right: KAG 14 Amp electric motor driving the dry fertiliser system.

Arend Langer from Carrotech / Monotec in Cape Town went up to the Natal Midlands for a planting of 4 hectares of Sugar Graze with the same electrically driven machine and interviewed Manfred on his farm afterwards:

Arend Langer :

Manfred, you used your new Brazilian made trailed No-Till planter for the previous season. What were the pleasant surprises when you used the Monosem No-Till planter ?

Manfred Hellberg :

The Monosem was planting how I wanted a planter to plant. The row spacing was perfect. The pips were all where they were supposed to be.

In addition, the Monosem row units seemed to be very sure footed on the ground, while my row units of the Brazilian planter were bouncing around. The Monosem row units were neither jumping nor in any way flexing sideways. It’s the first time I had such equal germination. I got the feeling that this Monosem Planter was able to maintain the correct depth much better than any other planter I had used in the past. That was a huge advantage.

AL : You were happy with the seed spacing and the seed singulation ?

MH : Yes, and the fact that the Monosem NX row-unit was much steadier than what I was used to, played a very big role during my No-Till planting operation.

AL : If you compare the Monosem metering unit to the one which you had in your Brazilian planter, some people say it “looks” the same or “is” the same, or “they copied the Monosem meter”. What are your remarks? :

MH : The Brazilian meter doesn’t seem to be finished as well. The basics seem the same, but the finer details are definitely not the same.

AL : What was the comparison of the seed spacing in the field ?

MH : There is no comparison. The Brazilian machine’s pip placement was all over the place and that was one of my big concerns. I bought that planter new so that everything would finally be going right ,but that Brazilian planter performed terribly. When I saw a Monosem planter at the Arlington Farmer’s Day in April 2015 being put into the ground, I dug up and saw that all the pips where at the correct spacing and I said to myself “This is how a planter is supposed to plant”

AL : What was better on the Brazilian Planter ?

MH : The Brazilian planter’s gauge wheels, being linked to the front, is definitely stronger. However, the advantage of the way that the Monosem’s gauge wheels are positioned, especially if it is set to touch against the row units double disc, is that you can plant in fairly wet conditions without any clogging up. With my previous planter I would have never been able to plant during the rainy days the way I had to planted with the Monosem planter this year. I planted after a 15 mm rain fall. When I got to the land I asked myself “What on earth are you trying to do today ?”. Then I put the Monosem planter into the ground and it planted. I couldn’t believe it.

AL : How do you like the Monosem’s No-Till fertiliser trip-tine ?

MH : It works very well. I had to use the double disc option on my Brazilian planter last season because I knew my lands have lots of stones and their tine, being only shear-bolt protected wouldn’t have worked well. When that planter got commissioned, the guys that were supposed to help set up the machine struggled to set up the planter correctly with the tines and we had to change to the double disc option very quickly. We only used the tines for a couple of meters and could see it will make a mess. The double disc option worked better, but in some harder soils, the fertiliser placement was not as deep as I would have wanted it to be. Where the tine would have dug itself in, the double discs work shallower and shallower the harder the soil becomes.

The nice thing about the Monosem No-Till fertiliser trip-tine is that you can set the fertiliser tine to dig it’s trench off set with your seed drop. Maybe that is also why it looks to be so obvious that the Monosem’s seed placement is so much better than that from my one year old Brazilian No-Till planter.

AL : What can you say about the different fertiliser bins ?

MH : Even though that the Monosem bins are slightly smaller it is a great feature that the Monosem bins are a lot lower which makes it much easier to fill them. With my Brazilian planter I had to load the fertiliser bags onto a trailer and only from there I could fill them into the planter. It was also very top-heavy. You really had to be very careful and turn very slowly.

AL : What else do you reckon is worth mentioning ?

MH : The marker arms are much stronger on the Monosem than on my Brazilian machine. Besides that, let me tell you what else has happened : A farmer from the other side of Dundee had just bought a green American vacuum planter this season. When the new machine’s seed singulation wasn’t performing to their satisfaction they installed an aftermarket precision kit. To get the kit to work properly they had to increase the vacuum on their planter, but in certain cases when they had to stop in the field and their P.T.O. revolutions would just drop a little bit. All the pips would fall of the seed plates. He came to visit me with his son, to see the Monosem planter with the electric motors and so on. They weren’t here very long when the son remarked : “Dad look, the tractor is only idling and not one pip is falling off the Monosem seed plate. ” That is exactly what it’s like, planting with a Monosem. You don’t need high tractor revolutions while stopping or turning to hold the pips onto the seed plates.

AL : Did you need to stop at all during planting for issues like things coming lose or breaking or inconsistent seed placement or fertiliser distribution ?

MH : There was never, ever anything wrong on the fertiliser side of this Monosem planter with the Fertisystem augers, I can tell you that.

AL : What were the things that forced you to stop ?

MH : I bent two gauge wheel arms during an accident with a big rock. Then there was trash coming in and blocking and preventing the gauge wheels from turning. It stopped us completely until we straightened the gauge wheel arms again.

AL : How does the downtime of your Monosem compare to your Brazilian planter ?

MH : With the Brazilian planter we didn’t have downtime. We just didn’t have a good stand either. But you must keep one thing in mind. With the Brazilian planter it wasn’t me planting. The Müller software developed for the electric drive shows such details as population, singulation, doubles and skips. In the past I used a South African developed planter monitor which only alerted me if seed flow stopped. It was unable to tell me how bad the accuracy of the planting with my Brazilian planter was. With the additional information, the tractor operator can monitor planting accuracy from the drivers screen. With me doing most of the planting, I would stop and check if the singulation went below 95%. If my tractor driver who did all my planting last year would have been the one planting with the Monosem using the South African developed planter monitor this year, he also wouldn’t have stopped for anything.

AL : Which one, in your opinion, is the stronger planter in your stony soils.

MH : That is difficult to say. We didn’t have time when we planted with the Brazilian planter. Having had the double discs and no trip-tines on, we didn’t try to rip up those large rocks with our Brazilian planter. We didn’t try to do it with the Monosem either, it just happened, and the Monosem could handle it.

AL : In other words, the Monosem has passed the test but you don’t know whether the Brazilian planter would have passed ?

MH : The Brazilian planter has failed to deliver proper seed spacing, and to me, that’s why you buy a new planter in the first place. In my opinion a new planter should deliver the correct seed spacing. That should be a given. All other things should be added to it like being nice and strong, being this and that. To me, you can’t have a planter that doesn’t put the pips down correctly.

The Brazilian machine at the time had cost me R360000 and the Monosem’s price at that time was R400000. Knowing what I know now, I would have paid the extra R 40000 and bought the Monosem in the first place.

The Ultra-Max toolbar features a ridged middle section in a ‘T’ form. This middle section carries four Monosem planter units, two 500 litre fertiliser hoppers and four fertiliser openers. The wing section of a 12-row planter will carry four row units each with two fertiliser hoppers and four openers. The wing section of a 16-row planter will carry six row units with three fertiliser hoppers and six openers. For transport, wings fold 90 degrees forward. Both machines in transport position will be just less than five metres wide.

During planting, the wings can swivel 15 degrees up and 15 degrees down to accommodate uneven terrain.

One of the obvious features of the Ultra Max toolbar is that it is extremely strong.

This is made possible by a construction that consists of three main beams that run across the full width of the unfolded machine.

The front 7 x 7 inch beam carries the fertiliser bins and the fertiliser openers
The rear 7 x 7 inch beam carries the Monosem planter units.
The third 9 x 5 inch beam, which is positioned higher, carries the pivot points and hydraulics.

There is no other frame construction on the market that folds forward in the same manner and is strong enough to carry the popular Monosem No-Till Coulter & Tine Combo.

New Monosem 12-row Planter with Ultra Max folding frame further advantages:

Numerous fertiliser tools are available on the new Ultra Max foldable frames. For No-Till conditions the planter would be equipped with straight cutting coulters that cut through tough residue and the auto reset fertiliser tines that penetrate even the hardest soils. For Conventional tillage the planter’s front beam would carry large 20 inch fertiliser openers.

Another advantage of the Ultra Max frame construction is that all the planter row units work in line, in other words, there is no off-set on the centre units.

The drive wheels of the planter run between the planter units as on most 4, 6 and 8-row planters. This makes these large planters considerably compact.

The contact drive system gives the owner of a 12 or 16 row planter peace of mind as it works with a minimum of chains, gears and bearings. This Monosem drive is a proven, simple and reliable system which eliminates unnecessary surprises and down time.

These Monosem trailed planters can be equipped with the “NX2” or with the “Monoshox®” planter units. Both these planter units are rugged enough to handle today’s “Conventional”, “Minimum-Till” and “No-Till” conditions.

There have been numerous deliveries of Monosem No Till Planters In Kwa Zulu Natal over this past season. Areas including Paulpietersburg, Dundee, Mooi River, Greytown, Creighton and the Kamberg to name a few.

This past season began with late rains once again forcing some Farmers to begin planting in tough dry conditions. This however is all too familiar for the Monosem No till planter which never shies from dry or wet lands.

The Monosem is equipped with an adjustable ‘standard’ spring loaded 460 mm ‘yetter’ front cutting coulter which is followed by an Auto Reset Ripper tine designed to penetrate up to 250mm. The adjustable Ripper Tine has a heavy duty auto reset spring with a 500kg kick out force on the Tine tip. This allows consistent tine depth in our all too often dry and hard soils. The Ripper tine assembly is designed in such a way to ensure the planter is pulled downwards into the ground to achieve maximum depth rather than rely on sheer weight like many of its ‘Brazilian’ competitors.

The Monosems are fitted with the acclaimed ‘Fertisystem (R)’ fertilizer distribution augers allowing a consistent and accurate flow of fertilizer even on the steepest uphill, downhill and off camber slopes. The ‘Fertisystem’ spiral augers guarantee an equal absorption of fertilizer by the plants without any waste regardless of the fertilizers granular properties. With its maintenance free ‘Auto Lube LP (R) bearings’ make the fertisystem the perfect fertilizer distribution system for the already accurate Monosem No Till planters.

The Monosem No Till Planter is fitted with the Heavy Duty NX planting units which have a far wider and shorter parallel linkage adding further strength to the already strong planting units. This ensures the pip placement is at least five centimeters off the fertilizer line even after several tough seasons. The tried and tested pneumatic Monosem metering boxes have proven to be one of the most accurate and hassle free systems promising perfect pip placement and population regardless of seed variety or conditions.

The Monosem pneumatic system is powered by a large turbo fan which is driven by either a PTO or Hydraulic pump. The metering units and Fertilizer distribution are driven by a contact drive ground wheel assembly which only activates once the planter has commenced planting. The contact drive wheel is tensioned by two large adjustable springs ensuring no slippage in even the wettest conditions. With the contact drive having no wearing parts, it ensures another hassle free system for the Monosem No Till Planter.

The Monosem no till planter is assembled with far fewer chains, sprockets and shafts then all its competitors, promising a much quicker, more accurate seed and fertilizer calibration. The planters are supplied with a highly accurate fertilizer chart allowing for the wide variety of fertilizer available in today’s market.

Monosem strives to supply a leading No Till planter for South Africa’s many harsh conditions, customized with the best of South America, North America, Europe and South Africa to ensure a truly unique planter for our unique conditions.

In South Africa we have learned many things from the Brazilians when it comes to planting without any tillage in advance. Nevertheless their climate, soil structure and planting conditions are very different from ours. Due to their high rainfall the Brazilian planters are designed to accommodate more planter units than what is normally used on frames in South Africa. What the SA farmer uses as a 6-row at 90cm was designed to be an 11-row at 45cm. While their planters are build to carry the planter units at 45cm distance our most common row distance in South Africa is 75cm or wider. Many farmers that use Brazilian planters in South Africa find the heavy weight of the machines a big disadvantage. These machines have such a heavy frame construction because the Brazilian planter does not allow for the planter wheels to run between the planter units. Their wheels are mounted in front of the units which makes their heavier machines longer as well. So, besides the great abilities of the No-Till planters from Brazil to plant right into your previous crop, right into thick stubble, their disadvantages are also quite obvious : The farmer needs a bigger tractor to pull, will consume more diesel and will waste more area while turning than necessary.

The advantages of the Monosem planter frame :

The Monosem No-Till planter has a shorter frame construction and the planter wheels are located between the planter units. This does not only make the Monosem planter very manoeuvrable but precise fertiliser placement is also ensured due to the short distance from the fertiliser tine to the seed coulter. This is of utmost significance when planting on slopes and contours where your planting line isn’t straight.

It is designed to trip only after a force of 500kg if it hits a rock and kick back into its working position afterwards. This ensures planting without any interruptions for shear bolt replacement even in the hardest soils.

The Monosem No-Till planter unit “NX” :

The short and sturdy linkage of the Monosem No-Till planter unit “NX” enables the placement of seeds off the fertiliser line.

When planting in heavy No-Till conditions other planter units usually tend to pull themselves into the trench that has been cut by the coulter and fertiliser tine. Even if the planter units are set to put the seeds some 5cm left or right off the fertiliser line a weak linkage will not keep the planter units where they are supposed to work but the harder ground will push the planter unit sideways to run into the softer soil where the fertiliser had been placed.

This also proves to be quite difficult when in some conditions the fertiliser trench doesn’t properly close before the seeds are put on top. Even if the trench cut by the fertiliser tine does close there is the risk that air-pockets remain underneath the seed because the tine had cut a lot deeper than the seeding depth which will hinder proper root growth later when the plants are young. No such worries are necessary when planting with the Monosem NX planter. The planter units are built so sturdy and rugged with a short and strong parallel linkage that it can keep itself 5cm off the fertiliser line even under hard conditions.

The Monosem No-Till trash cutting coulter is robust and efficient at various depth settings.

The fertiliser tine is also extremely robust in construction with significant spring pressure directly acting on the tine which trips where necessary and returns without interruption to the planting operation. Care must be exercised in not placing fertiliser too deep and the fertiliser delivery pipe must be adjusted accordingly.

The Fertisystem® fertiliser distribution system on the Monosem planters is accurate and surprisingly simple in design and function. Each auger’s performance can be seen from the driver’s position and the auger screws can easily be removed for maintenance.

The short, wide and robust parallel linkage of the new Monosem NX planter unit allows seed to be placed accurately off the fertiliser line.

The fertiliser and seed drive train is positioned above the trash, soil and debris contact zone. Again it is of a simple straight forward design with significantly few chains and sprockets. Calibration changes are easily executed and the system requires minimum maintenance.
